Limps are interesting things. They can arise from all sorts of situations, some good and some bad. Regardless, they show you have been somewhere. You did not escape unchanged, unscathed. You will bear the mark for as long as you live.

Being a believer in Jesus changes how I view work. Work isn’t about profit, although profit is nice. Work isn’t about approval, although I like to hear that I’m doing a good job from time to time. Work isn’t a burden, although some days—like today when it’s gloomy—it’s hard.

When work is an expression of love for God and others, I don’t worry about the work-life balance. I am balanced. I don’t get pulled into workaholicism. I don’t set standards of perfection. I aim for something else entirely: glorifying God and blessing others.

The more I work and the more I live, the more I realize how I need to be rooted in Christ. He gives me identity. He makes me who I am; in fact, he made me to be exactly who I am.

Everybody has a list of best, or must-have, books on writing, and I’m no exception. My books may not make everyone’s list; however, they are the ones I turn to again and again and again. They have things to say and teach me no matter how many times I read them. They correct me when I get my priorities mixed up and go astray. They center me. They remind me that I’ve been made in a certain way and with a certain purpose.
