The longer I’m self-employed, the more I realize I can’t do anything without God. In fact, I can’t live without him. He is my hope; he is my confidence. Because of him, I can rest instead of worry.
It’s a different approach for a recovering perfectionist. Perfectionists tend to worry ALL THE TIME. They’re afraid of making mistakes. They fear failure. They seek approval from sources that do not satisfy.
God frees me from that. I don’t have to walk in those things anymore. He’s given me a new path to walk, and, while it’s hard at times, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. When I walk with him, I can do my best and entrust the outcome to him.
It’s a practice I’m trying to follow more and more. Worrying doesn’t do any good, but prayer does. Prayer lets me leave things with God. It helps me follow him when life is painful and the path is uncertain. When I pray, I am reminded of who God is and what he has done.
Remembering Scripture does the same thing. For example, when I submit a proposal to a potential client, I think on these words:
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And confirm for us the work our hands;
Yes, confirm the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17, NASB)
I also turn to words found a few verses prior:
O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (Psalm 90:14, NASB)
I like meditating on both because they help me frame my life correctly. Even if the client doesn’t accept the proposal, it’s okay. God has a plan for his glory and my good. I may not see or know it, but I can trust him and his lovingkindness.
His gracious love is more than enough. It always satisfies, and it will always make me sing for joy and be glad all the days of my life, even the days I don’t understand what’s going on or why life has to be hard. I can rest in his promise and know that he sees me, hears me, and answers me when I call.
