Geoff Livingston (my boss!) and I have been working on a top-secret project that we’re happy to announce: an e-book that examines the shift from primarily text-driven communication to visuals. Our work in marketing, PR, social, and mobile has given us a birds-eye view of the situation, and it isn’t one that can be addressed by creating “snackable content.” We believe the shift is much deeper and larger than that. While we don’t believe words are going to disappear altogether, we do think a change in how we approach, create, and publish content is needed.
Our e-book shares our findings and offers network-specific tips for brands curious about adapting and succeeding in the visual, mobile world. Some of our tips include thinking mobile first; engaging journalists by supplementing pitches with photographs, videos, and other visual resources; and using Twitter Cards to stand out in the news stream. Other tips are:
- Create quality, engaging content for YouTube rather than just another television ad.
- Use pinned images on Pinterest to showcase your brand’s story and character.
- Grow your Instagram community by asking them to share images of your product in action.
- For increased engagement on Facebook, post multiple photos rather than a single one.
- To increase awareness on Flickr, license your photos so that people can share and use them.
- Use your six seconds on Vine to let your brand’s personality and creativity shine.
